Traditional Information*

Primarily used as a tonifying laxative. It contains the anthraquinones rhein and emodin, both of which are laxative and have anti-tumor activity. Like any stimulant laxative, regular use should be avoided, but occasional use for situational constipation or liver headaches with constipation is appropriate.
